CNN —After a disastrous year marked by high costs, accusations of environmental harm and project cancellations in 2023, there’s a sense the US offshore wind industry is on a rebound. But offshore wind is increasingly Trump-proof, according to a top White House climate official, wind CEOs and an industry analyst. “This year will be a significant year for offshore wind development,” BOEM director Elizabeth Klein told CNN in a statement. The US supply chain for offshore wind is still being built; therefore, projects are turning to European manufacturers to get blades, gearboxes, and other components. Now, he said, Northeast governors “just want to make sure their states have energy.”New York has been aggressively pursuing offshore wind projects, rebidding previously canceled projects and accepting those projects at higher prices.

This story is said to have inspired the novel "Moby-Dick," and was adapted into a 2015 film. In fact, killer whales may have been key characters in the infamous incident that inspired Herman Melville's 1851 novel "Moby-Dick." "Moby-Dick" is inspired by a sperm whale, not a killer whale, sinking the whaling boat "Essex" in 1820. From there, the sailors had to fight off the conditions of the open ocean and follow up attacks by possible orca whales. The novel that resurfaced the story of the EssexPhilbrick's book is a historical recount of what happened to the real sailors that inspired Melville's tale.

A project to develop a facility described as the United States' "first commercial-scale offshore wind project" continues to move forward after its first turbine was installed in waters off Martha's Vineyard. In an announcement Wednesday, Avangrid — which is part of the Iberdrola Group — and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners said the Vineyard Wind 1 project would eventually have more than 60 turbines. "The project will consist of 62 wind turbines to generate 806 Megawatts, enough to power more than 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts," Wednesday's announcement said. Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra described the news as "a monumental achievement and a proud day for offshore wind in the United States," adding that there was "important work ahead" to install the project's remaining turbines.

Soon, factories processing whale oil, meat and bones sprung up on the islands. After crude oil was discovered in 1859, the demand for whale oil decreased dramatically in the following decades. In 1990, French national Serge Viallele set up the first whale watching company in the archipelago, on Pico island. The number of whale watching boats is strictly limited by a license system, which issues a maximum number per island – or per zone for the smaller islands. For now, whale watching remains a major draw for visitors to the islands.

Taste by Spellbound, a bakery in Avon, encountered the furry guest on May 24, according to a Facebook post. The bakery explained that a staff member was placing items in the shop’s loading garage when she saw a bear in the garage. “The bear then MOVED one of our fridges in front of the door.”One staff member called 911 while another got in her car and beeped its horn until the bear left. Police responded and the bakery’s landlord has been working with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, according to the Facebook post. The bear chows down on the sweets before the car comes around, triggering the bear to retreat towards the nearby dumpsters.

A Massachusetts man fatally shot his fiancée's father and wounded her mother and sister, then turned the gun on himself, after expressing he was “unhappy” that they were living with him, prosecutors said. His fiancée’s sister, 25, and their mother, 59, were also hospitalized at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and are both expected to survive. Shortly after, Labasquin got into a physical struggle with Baptiste, “at which point Mr. Labasquin was shot,” the district attorney’s office said. As the fiancée was calling 911, Baptiste allegedly shot her mother and sister then shot himself, prosecutors said. He had a valid license to carry the firearm, according to the district attorney’s Office.

WASHINGTON — The country’s largest gun safety group is turning its attention down ballot by pumping money into local sheriff races this election. Everytown for Gun Safety, the massive gun control group founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, told NBC News on Friday it's “leaving no stone unturned in the fight to end gun violence” and will spend $300,000 on digital ads in two sheriff races this year. County sheriffs, unlike most law enforcement officers, are directly elected by voters in most parts of the country. “Sheriffs are elected to enforce the law, not make them,” said John Feinblatt, head of Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund. The Bernalillo County race in New Mexico race falls along more familiar partisan lines.
